hey guys im sorry if this sounds really lazy but i need a favour. Im in exam period for yr12 an im gettin my A15 2morrow. My mechanic that is puttin it in wants 2 see written proof that he does'nt need 2 screw around with anythin. Its goin in a 1981 1200 ute. If anybody else here has done the conversion then can u plz write anythin that either i or my mechanic should know. I have heard its a straight drop in conversion, but he has heard diffrent!!!. Any info would be much much appreciated, as i am very busy Cheers

YUp. It'l go straight it, I have just had mine put in. ONe problem occured with the exhaust...needed to use the a15 exhaust of the manifold. But apart from that it was straight forward. He will have to use the a12 flywheel aswell.

why do you have to use the a12 flywheel, if thew a15 was a manuaul wont it still work woth the a12 gearbox? A12 flywheel only for performance benefit as previously discussed

In an '81 ute. The engine mounts will need to be moved outwards on the Crossmember but your ute should be slotted to allow this. The exhaust flange will be different, extractors? There will probably be a heap of pollution gear that you won't need. The alternator may be different, but you can put your original on. I would reccommend changing the passanger side engine mount to something stronger straight up.

with reguards to anti polution gear, I was told by my local pit inspection man, that the polution gear is only required for the engine, not for the car that it is goind into. That means if you wanted to put say a red 253ci into a vt dunnydore, then you can throw away all the anti polution crap that comes with the newer motor, and just stick with the carbon canister that it came with.
So in conclusion, if the a15 is from a polution model car, say mid 80s, then whatever that motor required for its year, then thats what has to be legally fitted, not what was fitted to the car its going into.
hope that helps

yeah thats right, but on the east coast, you can NOT put an engine in your car if it is older than your car... eg 253 v8 into a vt crapodore. You can out an ls1 into the vb-vk commodore, with all the anti pollution gear and cat converttors with an enginers certificate. They have craked down nowdays. its pretty similar in vic and nsw/act nowdays. Rumour has it engine conversions are also going to be affected by power to weight ratio for enginereing and rwc soon in vic too. no more p platers with ca18dets thats for sure!
