Anybody try puttin in a late model 200 SX rear? I think they can handle all the power an A series would ever hope to have.

A 200SX rear ? Are we talking S13, S14 or S15?

All are quite heavy. And would unbalance the rear of a 1200 quite considerably. It would also need to be narrowed at least 100mm.

I have seen people narrow the S13 (200SX,240SX) rear IRS with R200 to fit a 510 wagon. This handles ok but due to changed suspension geometry, the CV joints are subject to increased axial movement.

So I don't think this is a common exercise, but if it were done, I suspect some weight removal and considerable geometry changes would be required to make it work as well as it does in the S13/S14/S15.

That is exactly what I'm doing at the moment!
I have an extra differential from an S110 (H190) with disk brakes...I'm going to narrow the housing and the axles to match the dimensions of my coupes' differential.
Once I saw a photo posted by a fellow club member (Yahoo Datsun 210) of the axle shafts of both the H190 and the H150...I was determined to go ahead a do this change. After all the axles on the H190 are not tapered which allows them to be cut and resplined.

Yeah its the rear disc brakes I'm after, along with the extra strength. My mild built A15 has a lot more grunt than stock, and the stock diff is so loud, you can hear me comin a mile away! Keep us posted on your progress.

Here are the quoted prices I got to narrow the s110 rear end from Cooks' Machine Shop:

Narrow the housing in a lathe @300.00
Narrow tha axle shafts @ 200.00
Heat treat the axles @150.00 to 200.00

Still cheaper than a ford 9 inch conversion...but if I go through the conversion... I would need a LSD to make it worth the expense and trouble! How difficult is it to find a LSD for a H190??

Dude, the H190 weighs a ton, which will upset a 1200 more than a little bit. It's also physically really, really big, and will hit the rear crossmember if you lower the thing any...

Go through the same exersize with a H165 from a vanette, or just bolt an Escort diff straight in...

Unless you plan on running 500hp that is.... ;)

Add one more con to the H190: factory LSD's are extremely hard to come by. Nissan Comp cleared out the few remaining NOS items last year. Of course, an LSD may not be important to you, especially if you're building a drag car. If so, then you won't mind a few extra pounds and may appreciate the rear discs.

tsally,
My differential came off a 200sx hatchback...The 1981 factory workshop manual states these cars came with a H165B and the late '82 and '83s came with the H190. How can I tell them apart???
P.S.
I check out your 200sx It looks AWESOME!!

Thanks leosnake, we have moments of awesomeness with the 240, but lack consistency!!

I'm pretty sure that the H165 head is held in the housing with bolts, whereas the H190 is held in with studs and nuts....
Also, the H165 has 8 bolts, the H190 has 10...

Ah, if you cant lift it, it's a H190!!
