The downside of these is that they are blowing high levels of water vapour through your interior, which can lead, in the wrong conditions, to mildew & rust.
A real AC works the other way, it de-humidifies the air, which is much better for your car.
The evaporative types seem to work well enough, but the price can, if you are not carefull, be too high.

The engine driven compressor, along with the double crank pulley & the belt adjusting mechanism all go into the engine bay. So does the receiver drier along with the plumbing. The condenser is normally mounted in front of the radiator.
When it comes to the asthetics of engine bay space consumption, you gotta make a choice. You either want AC, or you dont.
