Hi, I have a '72 1200 auto. The engine keeps dying when i'm driving along, but it can start up again once i've stopped. The charge light comes on when it does die. Does anyone know what kind of mongrel problem this is? I'm wondering whether it might be the alternator. The problem seems to have started when i changed the positive battery terminal lead because the old one was scrappy. The new lead is thicker than the old one - i wouldn't have thought this has anything to do with my problem though.
Thanks for any help andrew

The charge light should come on whenever the engines stop -- whether you manually shut it off or it dies. So this tells you that the light is working correctly.
Sometimes the problem is caused by loose or corroded connectors at the coil, or more commonly at the ballast resistor. Also take the distributor cap off and make sure the wires are tight, especially where they go through the side of the distributor.
