one of my manifold studs is knackered, and i want to put a heli-coil in but not sure on the process

can i just drill it with a hand drill or does it really have to be done with a press?

i was thinking of just loc-tite but theres only about 2 threads left in the head, and the stud already has rattled out (without loc-tite in)

whats the story with these heli-coils, or should i loc-tite and hope?

And i thought that you were an engineer.
Where possible, it is best to drill out the damaged thread in a fixture that guarantees perfect alignment, however, this is not always possible.
If you are VERY carefull with a hand held drill, then you can do this job successfully. The trick is to drill straight, or else the newly installed stud will not protrude straight, & this leads to a whole new set of problems. It probably would not hurt to use some sealant when installing the stud to preclude any coolant leaksge here, but don't use Locktite stud lock, just a suitable sealant.

Is it possible that this has been the cause of your problems with manifold gasket leakage with the A15tt?

my manifold gasket problems ended when i changed the gasket i was getting

though this is sort of a new problem, i had three heli-coils put in but my mechanic didnt do this hole, wish he did, knew at the time it would be the next problem one

i guess ill give it a go with the hand drill as i really dont like the idea of taking the head off

in what part of sitting in lecture thearters do you think they taught us how to install a heli-coil?

mechanical engineering is not automotive specific, and does not contain practical work, thats not what engineers do anyway
