amp meters are annoying as, you need to basically run the power for everything through it, i really dont like the idea of doing that at all, so never bothered putting one in, my brother tried putting one in once and toasted half his wirring

a voltage meter on the other hand you can basically hook up anywhere to a positive and an earth from anything and it will read the system voltage perfectly

Amperage metres are connected in series. So basically you need to take (disconnect) the big power wire from your alternator, run it to one side of the guage, then from the other side of the guage you need to run another same thickness wire to the alternator where you took the other wire from. This will then tell you how many amps your alternator is making at a specific point in time.

Edit: yeah like 1200rc said. Amp guage pretty much gives pointless info

I dint wanna burn my wiring as well.
I just need to establish where does the main positive wire go.

PS.
The are 3 wires, ie 2 + and 1-
One+ for the bulb, and the other for the Metre-guage itself.

I do Know , that these metres serves as pointless info to some,
but in my case its a necassity, cause of the audio set-up I have installed, I would like to know, how my alternator's charging, and not have to wait until the charge light comes on.

PLUS HAVING THESE METRES GIVES A BIT MORE CHARACTER TO MY DATTO WITH THE RECTANGULAR DASH

Ok so the light gets -ve through the guage itself, so the guage has to be earthed. The light wire goes to dash lights +ve.
Guage +ve goes to alternator power since the alt is putting out the power and the guage negative side goes to the battery +ve which originally went to the alt.
****That is if it is an amps guage****

Edit: Is the +ve and -ve terminals bothe insulated from the gauge body itself?

Only the positives are insulated

Well if it has 3 wires , 1 for light, 1 +ve and 1 -ve and only the +ve is insulated, then its not an amps guage or atleast one that will work by reading amps.
If you can take a photo it will help or maybe you are best to see your mechanic
