To rectify steering play you will first need to IDENTIFY where the problem actually is.
Worn tie rod ends, ball joints or idler arm will all contribute to play in the wheel.
If your [unknown] car has a regular steering box, then follow the instructions in the book & ensure that there is no end float in the steering column.
Once you have identified the location of the problem, then follow the book & fix that part[s] Just diving in to do a sector shaft adjustment without identifying the real cause first is not very professional.
If you find it necessary to replace any of the steering parts, then make sure that you have the wheel alignment checked as it will likely be off a little.
