hey guys I have developed a noisy , erratic speedometer on my '71 510 wagon,how do i service this? You guys are great I am slowly working thru minor glitches with your help.

Either replace the cable, or first lubricate it. Remove it and tip oil down it.

New cable.

If the engine has been disturbed (removed/serviced), then the ground cable between engine and body has been either neglected or not properly cleaned when reinstalled.

This makes the speedo cable the earth for the starter motor, and it cooked the nice polyethylene liner inside of the speedo cable.

So there you go.
