A-15 .080 over
11:1 compression
279 duration cam (232@.050) and .460" lift
ported A-15 head
oversize valves (dont remember exact sizes)
Nismo Header
MSN 6A Ignition Box
Elec. Ignition
Redline Intake with a couple 40 mm DCOEs

Anybody have any estimates? The car is a 210 and weighs 1700 pounds. The engine pulls extremely well past 6000 rpm. It's still a new engine (less than 75 mi) so we havent really pulled it to max rpm yet. We're looking at knocking down a lot of Hondas with this engine.

There is a lot more to an engine than the "bits". A college student can put an engine together in a tech class. Someone who has been R&D'ing the same engine for 30 years can put it together also.

Add a couple of factors like cam timing and carby tuning and head porting and you can see where I am coming from.

You "should" see 90 hp at the wheels with something like this. But as I mentioned this could be back to 60 with a poor dissy setup with lack of advance. . . or bad carb tune.

But without being negative:

90HP, good for a mid 15 1/4 mile. (only an estimate)

Without trying to raise any tensions, I feel like you just insulted me. I am aware that there is more to an engine than the "bits". While this is the first A-series engine I have put together I do have other experience with engine building, mostly V8s. I only threw the "bits" out because I was looking just a generalized answer because I have absolutely no clue what kind of power one can expect from such a small engine. If you go back and read my original post again you will see that I already mentioned the head porting. As a matter of fact, it has been ported quite extensively, though it has never been flowed. The porting and all of the machine work was performed by a very reputable machine shop in the Tacoma, Washington area. I dont know about elsewhere but a quality machine shop is hard to come by around here. What kind of cam timing information would you like? The cam is installed straight up and is ground on a 106 intake centerline with a 108 lobe center to go along with the other information I provided in my previous post. The carbs are in fact currently very poorly tuned seeing as how neither of us have any experience with anything like them but we are learning. We have not touched the distributor because we have no idea how much timing those engines like and so we felt it would be best to leave it alone until we do have the chance to put it on a chassis dyno and establish some sort of a baseline we can work by. We have Wiseco forged pistons in the engine and I can provide those specs to you if I can dig up the spec sheet that came with them. The engine has ARP head and main studs along with ARP rod bolts. The engine was balanced. We also installed a tilton 10 lb aluminum flywheel with a centerforce clutch. We have no idea what transmission is in the car or what the gear ratios are, same goes for the rear end. Any info on this and what vehicles have stronger components that might be suitable for a swap (we're up for a challenge if needed) Our current idea is swapping in a narrowed GM 7.5 10 bolt (should hold up well with a small car and small engine) and possibly some adjustable coil overs and a four link setup. Any other (better) suggestions would be appreciated.

welcome to the site My350
sounds like your keen to find out a bit about these little A series engine and drive line set ups. with the little engine building knowledge i have the set up you've got described should get you a good 90 odd hp at the wheels
as for the 4link rear end, one of the other members of the site has put together a very impressive storey of his own build up showing just about everything to get your mind racing check out http://www.shoeys.com/ and also the serch bar over there on the left can give you some good results

Tuned correctly, ~100hp @ the wheels. More with bigger carbies.

BTW, what's with the "we" stuff? Multiple owners, shop, a bunch of friends ?

Bigger carbs than 40s? I thougt those would already be rather large to begin with but I dont know much about them. The "we" I speak of is my friend and I. It's his car, I built the engine. Hopefully I'll have pics of it before too long. I think you might find the car somewhat interesting looking.

It should make about 110@ the wheels @7000 and run 14.0 to 14.5.

love to hear what it makes.

Any true power figures for it are still a while down the road, probably not for a couple months when summer gets here. I will say this..with the engine as it originally sat you could dump the clutch at 6000 or so and if you're lucky maybe get some slight wheel hop. Now from about 1500 in gear you can hammer the throttle and it'll smoke the tire easily. (unfortunately it's only one tire and not both tires) Like Is said earlier, I usually work with Chevy V8s and not Datsun A series engines. At least it isnt a silly looking Honda. How do I submit photos? I have a couple you might be interested in seeing. Should be good for a small laugh when you see the car.

i have used Camshafts with much larger Duration than yours on a street motor but with around the same lift ,,And they still idle very sweet at idle with the twin webbers on ,, I have tried both Twin 40mm and 45mm webbers on the there gains to be made above 6500rpm with 45s and larger chokes in the carbs .. i was really surprised how big you can go with carbs and cam and still have a sweet street engine in the bottom end power ,, The power band iam talking about is Strong between 4500 to 8000rpm , tighter lobe centres around 106 really work the best with a low restriction exhaust ,, if you have any restriction you better off going back to 108 to 110deg for street ..
