i have the complete front end out of an 83 bluebird and another front end out of a 76 120y
i want to put a disk brake front end in my 1200 and i was wonder what you guys think would be easier/better

i know that the 120y front end is a pretty easy swap over, so i really need to know what work is required for getting the bluebird frontend in. is it worth it or should i just go for the 120y front end

i have a fair bit of time and all of the necissary tools(dads a mechanic)

Not many people use the bluebird stuff in 1200s that I know of.

You'd probably need the Stanza A10 lower arms and control rods, and outer tierod ends/rods to use the bluebird struts.

Go the 120Y struts and look for sports 1200 springs to reduce the height by 1-2 inches.

the 120Y discs are puny. I think they're the same size as the 1200 coupe discs? I wouldn't even consider it an upgrade. The wheels road test of the 1200s showed the drum braked equipped sedans out-performed the disc braked coupes in the braking tests!

Most common upgrade is the Stanza (Girlock brake) strut swap, and it will give a good increase in braking performance. Do the Bluebirds have the large diametre springs? If so they're not suited to the 1200 strut towers. Do a search and see what turns up - there's heaps of brake/strut conversion info here.

the bluebird has girlock brakes in it, i think it has larger diameter springs

what about 200b front end, does that fit into a 1200, and would a bluebird front end fit into a 200b

im just trying to work with what i have, and a stanza isnt is not something i have

the 1200 has pretty much no braking ability at the moment so id rather go the disks rather than reco the drums

I have tried both conversions, and found the 120y disc conversion is by far the easiest, it makes the brakes less "grabby". If you don't mind the extra work and cost then the stanza/200b/910 upgrade is by far the best. I now have the 910 front brakes/suspension and they work best.

I have fitted the larger diameter strut, with new inserts fitted shortened the tube by 20mm, They do fit but only just. I am looking at fitting the 1200 spring platform and springs as I don't like the harse ride, clearance is also an issue on full lock.

To make the 910 struts fit, 310 sunny bottom arms, ball joints and steering arms are required, also don't forget to remove the residual line pressure valve from the Master cylinder.

The 310 bottom ball joints are required as the taper is bigger and they are also longer in the body, so that less lowering is required to get the right camber. This increases the track by about 25mm. This in-turn allows you to run a larger offset wheel like the TRX rim, up to about 6" wide before it extrudes the guard.

Sunny Bottom arms are required as the lock stop radius bracket is a different shape to the standard 1200 bottom arm.

You will also need to have a spacer made up to fit the sunny steering arm to the strut. the bolt holes are the same but the spigot on the 310 arm is alot smaller.

i think i'll just go with the 120y set-up, as i have every thing that i need for it. i have the time to do the other conversion, but not all of the components.

with the 120y conversion i know that you have to use the 1200 strut top, but what else is reqiured. i have to use the 120y brake lines and master cylinder dont i

if you've got a tandem master cylinder you should be right, if not go the tandem off the 120y your stripping for bits. the 120 disks will be only slightly better than the stocko drums after a few heavy goes on them....if you can wait a bit the stanza upgrade appears to be the best for $$$ i'm in the middle of it at the moment so i can give you a real idea in a week or so ??

jonny major in grovedale has a bunch of 120y's out in the back paddock that are destined for the crusher

also where abouts in geelong are you?? ... i live down torquay way

the 120y with PBR brakes are slightly bigger than the jap ones pads are bigger and the borg warner rear drums are larger as well.

Regarding fitting 200B struts (I got some with girlock brakes for next to nothing)

Is it possible to fit the discs/calipers to 120Y struts?

Or

The stocko front drum strut ball joint/steering arm bolt spacing appears identical to that of the 200B strut - will this fit? (possibly with the bolt holes enlarged 2mm?)
