Is there a special tool for removing the tranny fluid drain plug (79 A14)? It's a square head, I think 12mm but I could be remembering it wrong - maybe 14mm. I tried to get mine to come loose for about 15 minutes before I gave up (using just a regular wrench). I would have tried kicking it but the wrench doesn't hold in place, but if there's a special tool I could put it on and kick it or hammer it. Should it be that hard to remove??? I also tried a "cheater bar" on the wrench. I'm afraid I'll round the head if I push too hard witha regular wrench.

I did a search and didn't find anything. Sorry for the dumb questions....but thanks for the help.

i took mine out the other day and all i used was an open end spanner and it didnt do the plug any damage

yeah me and unfamilia gave up on trying to use a 14 mm spanner/wrench, couldnt get the plug out at all, and broke my spanner trying

but that was due to lack of tools, normally i use a shifter (adjustable wrench) and tighten that onto it as much as possible, then hit the end with a hammer, not too hard, just to break it free, never had a problem doing it that way

I tried again today and pretty much rounded the plug. I was using the 14mm spanner and was tapping it with a rubber mallet. Screw it I'll just take the tranny off and figure it out later. I hope these plugs are still available from Nissan. Most likely mine is trash. Thanks for the advice.

This plug is usually a tapered thread so I imagine that someone has overtightened it at some stage due to it leaking. Next time you try with the spanner and the hammer, try a hard faced hammer because using a soft hammer usually just absorbes some of the shock you are trying to apply to the plug head and as a result you get a round head on the plug. If all else fails a little heat applied to the casing can do wonders, not tooo much though or you will start cooking stuff inside the box.

i have just taken out the gearbox of my 120y coupe yesterday and I undid the square headed filler plug with a shifter and a bit of human leg muscle while the gearbox was out on the ground.
It losened quite easily
But with the drain plug at the back of the gearbox,(gearbox still mounted in car) I couldnt loosen it, by hitting the shifter with a hammer, so I got someone else to push on the shifter with their foot, while I was holding it on the drain plug.
This worked very well and loosened the plug easily.

what plug are we talking about. Drain plug/fill plug with the square in the middle? If so this is for a 1/2 socket bar.

2 people is the way, one push and one pull each from either side of the car, if that dosnt work, hammer, cold chisel and vice grips, brutal but should do it.

Freak, yeah this is the drain plug. What is a 1/2 socket bar? I may try the hammer as one last attempt but even with the mallet I was getting the wrench to slip around the head (rounding off). May be too late to try anything else with that spanner. What I don't get is why couldn't this be a simple 14mm Hex head? Is there some reason to use this stupid square head!?!??
