dropping a burnout on take off the other night (1st gear), the diff must have let go and locked up, loading up the drivetrain and taking out the gearbox with it

but then must have freed up again cause the car still rolls....

and theres a big knocking nosie when it's running, clutch in or out, hope the motors ok..........

i know the diff is shagged cause i just pushed the car and it wasnt binding up and chirping the tyres as it did before (welded centre)

the gearbox has issues as sometimes it wont pick any gears, and theres the huge knock which i aslo hope is gearox....

i will get a tail shaft shortened, and chuck in a spare diff centre i had (not welded this time), along with the celica 5 spd, aslong as the motors all good, otherwise i need an a15 block aswell

dont ya farkin hate that, will it run for more than a couple of weeks consecutively

The end of another era. Arent you running a h190? I thought one of these would handle it easy welded or not. My uncle once had something like this happen. Came around the bend at Lakeside onto the main straight in his early model holden, hit third gear hard and broke just about every part of the drivetrain. Gearbox, uni's, diff and maybe and axle aswell cant remember.

So whats the verdict on the locked diff. Love it or hate it?

its not really over, just another hassle to the longwindedness of puting a powerfull engine in a car that originally had 69hp at the flywheel

keep slogging it out mate, as i know you will

If the diff's not binding and you only plan to change the centre. Heres hopeing you stripped the splines in the centre and not on an axle or even broke an axle.

my money's on the axle. street driving with a locker is hell on axles. and it would explain the thumping noise.

yep you have snap an axle mate i done plenty and no the symtoms.
The noise is the axle moving around. Just jack it up 1 of the wheels will have a bit of a wobble.

If I may go against the crowd.......

I'd just about put money on that your little A15 doesn't have the grunt to blow the axle in a H190. I actually blew mine a couple of weeks back in my bluebird (FJ powered) and the first thing to let go was the spider gears attached to the carrier.
This meant you could put it in gear and the diff centre would just spin making some terrible clunking noises. The noises were from the pinion and crown wheel chewing up bits of gears!
