Hi guys I am wondering if the Flywheel on "The Defect" could be an A15 flywheel because it spools up VERY quickly!

I think someone on here said that an A15 flywheel is lighter thn an A12 one??

also I have noticed that there are TWO distinct flywheel spiggot sizes - the A12 in ""The Defect" was a large one while the flywheel( and the A12 it came off) were small I am SO happy that Dad is good on the lathe )

the gearbox, tailshaft and other reqired parts were from the (ex) neighbor's daughter's Junior Stockcar...

Mawler1 I'm with you.
I was running a 5-speed on my A12 till it blew up - ran out of oil, don't ask. I replaced with the 4-speed, rebuilt, but still get this noise, kinda of something under load about to go bang. Intermittent, but sounds exactly like the noise of the spiggot bearing getting shredded like what happened with the 5 speed. I keep telling these dud mechanics that they need to change the flywheel back to a 4-speed (it has a 1500 flywheel) but they disagree. What could this noise be? Something's up.

By the way, a 1500 flywheel is thicker than a standard 1200 flywheel

maybe I have a A12 flywheel after all... I'm not pulling the gearbox out to find out!

that banging sound that you can hear isn't good it sounds like the flywheel's trying to come loose - I could be wrong I'd take your datto elsewhere - you don't want to risk it's or YOUR life with those fools!...

All A series flywheels are the same.
You have to get it lightened to have a lightened one...or it was lightened before.

All A series flywheels are NOT the same.
They are, however, dimentionally "interchangeable"

The A10 is the lightest, in stock form, but it is drilled for the smaller clutch that was used in the Datsun 1000 models
Next came the 1200 flywheel, & i suspect that later A12 flywheels are the same. This one was drilled to take the larger size clutch that was used on all subsequent models, so this flywheel is the lightest one to take this clutch size.
Next heaviest is the A14 flywheel. As engine sizes grew, so too did the flywheel weight.
The A15? I don't know about this one, but i "believe" that it is heavier again, but can't say for absolute sure.

Another spanner in the works is the commercial models, like Vanettes. I think that they might have heavier flywheels than the ones used behind the same size engine in a passenger car, but we would need to weigh known samples to be absolutely sure.

So there you go, they are NOT all the same as each oher.
