I'm doing some research on what tyres are best for circuit sprints and wanted to get people's opinions.

These are the front runners so far:
Dunlop Formula-R D01J or DZ02G (soft and super-soft)
Bridgstone RE520 or RE540 (soft or hard)
Toyo Proxies R888
Kumho Ecsta V70A
Kumho VictoRacer V700
Yokohama A032

Anyone got any opinions???

for price durability and grip the A032R's seem to be the go...they are street legal too!!!
I have them on my Coupe and I improved over 4 secs a lap over Kuhmo slicks

Hey guys,
good to see your result on GP circuit. NO driving straight past me next time though ! The tyre for Supersprints is Toyo Proxies RA-1 or the new Toyo R888. I'm told they are an excellent tyre from cold and will out perform the others by far. Chris Peterson uses them on his coupe for this reason (Wakefiekd is his home track). Yokohama is the most common due to it being a control trye for IPRA. If I had the cash, I'd go straight for the Toyo.
Cheers

The Proxes RA1 are the gun tyre for hillclimbs because they come on so quick due to the soft compound and the small tread blocks which build heat quickly. They're also awesome in wet conditions. But they do go off on 4 lap supersprints up here in Brisbane though. On a light 1000 in Sydney, that might be less of a problem. And they'd probably be alot better if you had them buffed down before use, because the tread is very deep for a race tyre. Apparently they feel loose and soft under the car too.

Kuhmos have won Targa Tas on the Suby the other year, and Silverstones won Classic section of Classic Adelaide, but both of those are a bit of a gamble if you ask me. They might be as good as the Yokohamas, but they might not be either.

I use the Yokohama A032R S (soft) because they are a known quantity. You know they are going to work in wet or dry, and you know they are going to be consistent for the distances we do. You also know you'll easily get a full season (or more) out of them.

As far as Azenis are concerned, unless they've changed them from a few years ago - they are simply not a race tyre. They look like a race tyre, but they are just ridicuosly hard. They're better than normal passenger tyres, but only because of the stiff sidewalls, and they don't squeal because of the huge tread blocks - there really isn't much more absolute grip available from them.

My vote also goes for the Toyo's, although I have never used them. I too have seen Chris Petersen get remarkable times at Wakefield and Oran Park on them.

Me, I've tried a few different ones.
Dunlop Furmula-R in 185/580/15 and 195/55/15, great once they have warmed up [not so good for super sprints]. I think that the Dunlop inherently dont like being heat cycled as much as say the Yokies. The Dunlops go very hard in a relatively short time.

Pirelli P-5000 radials in 195/50/15 good grip, but a bit squirmy on corners.

Yokies A032R in 185/60/14 great alround tyre. Good consistant feel. Can feel a little slippery when they are cold. [I got mine second hand and I think they are getting a bit hard].

Falken RSV-04 semi slick, 195/55/15, I have developed the most grip with these tyres using the current suspension settings on the 1200. Less understeer and tends to pick up the inside tyre more. very soft though. But they are priced very well.. $150 each when I bought mine.

Thumbs up for the Toyo Proxie RA1's for me They work well at any temp ideal for supersprints and hillclimbs ect. They worked fine doing circuit too. Wakfeild park gave them a fair workout no problems for me.
Not too badly priced either I payed $220 205/50/15 and $250 each for 225/50/15

Thanks for the response so far everyone!

There certainly is no shortage of options. I've got some prices today and thought I'd share some of them:
Yokohama A032R - $200ea
Bridgestone RE520 - $200ea approx
Toyo R888 185/60/14 - $200ea
Dunlop D01J (S) 185/60/14 - $240

After a bit more research its looking good for the toyo's or yokohama's. I'll need the R888's as the RA-1's are wider and I think will scrub on my guards. 195/60/14's are a terribly big tyre when you're trying to fit them to a lowered 1000 coupe.

From what I can gather, the R888's are the best performing tyre, while the yokohama is a good allrounder with great wear qualities.

Does anyone know the proper tyre ratings for any of these tyres??? eg: 50/AA/A or 60/AA/C etc.
