What can i say, finally after 10months of being off the road the datsun is alive and two litre powered. The L20b motor is standard bar a webber from a falcon and a bit of a 2 inch exhaust. Boy does it hoot for the cost, dead even with mates two litre esky that has a cam, exhaust an webber. This same car has kept with a cordia turbo that had the usual mods so id bet it might crack a 16 sec quarter with traction. Also a interesting point, im running a 280zx 5 spd box and it fit in my MANUAL tunnel with NO mods other than cutting off the old a series mounts! I used the flywheel and clutch off the Z too, works great. Shifter is back quit a bit but is still comfortable. I am running a locked borgwarner 120y diff and so far so good. A quik shift from first to second results with wheelspin and opp lock! Lots of tourque compared to what im used to driving, stocka gemmy with locker! The car is in getting the exhaust finished off now cant wait to drive it again, wish i could get some pics for you guys but i dont have a damn camera! Any questions dont hesitate!

With a set of twin 40's and some head work I reakon you should be into the 14's I would have said... def low 15's with the right ratios...

Oh and get elec ignition if you dont already, another cheap upgrade. My car did 16.2 not tuned properly and not much traction (thats in a 1600, prob 100kg heavier?? Another guy there on the same day did 15.4 I think, that was with L20b headwork/elec dizzy extractors and twin 40's

Anyway sounds like one sweet as ride. I'll be putting an L18 in my 1200 as soon as I can find one at the right price... Then I'll turbo it :P

How does it go for bonnet clearance? I know the l20b's are taller than the L18/16 and some ppl were having trouble with those??

Also are you getting it engineered? or just take it easy on the rd?

Oh and the tailshaft, did that need to be shortened? or did you get it out of something else?

sorry for all the qn's and I know some could be answered by using the search button.... Theres just so much info to sift thru on here

i had to chop approx 20mm from the crossmember and reweld it up. I also added some extra bracing. I had to space the 120y sway bar down approx 10mm to clear the oil pump but once i did that it fits Sweet. i swear 1200s are made for the l series just its a damn tight fit and a pain to work on. Throughout the conversion i was wondering wether it was worth it as there is no room to get at gearbox bolts so its an engine box out affair. After first test drive i decided it was worth the blood sweat and tears! i want to engineer it badly but need to save some money up, ill just drive it easy for a while for now though. Yes i got the two tailshafts joined and shortened, for anyone in sa id recomend repco balancing centre in wingfield, did it all in new bearings for only $130. No worries any more questions just ask and thanks for the comments!

I have the elec ign too was on the motor, does this make it a series one or two, what comp ratio do they have. I have a turbo setup in my room that i biult for it, was going to sell it but ive seen the light and will put it on later once everything else on the car is sorted. It uses a big ct20b turbo, supra front mount and is setup for blow through. I only had setup running on axle stands but standing on the brakes and nailing it in 5th with 10 psi was like it is now in second, god it will nail and blow my diff

they were! it's just a shame we never got the L14 powered PB110 Sunny Excellent - would have made life much easier!

a mild cam will really wake the L series up - that should be your first mod.

go good don't they ??

mines stock apart from single weber/extractors/2.5 inch exhaust, and its about the same speed as a late 90's SS commodore (5.0 V8) up until 100 km/h or so anyway.

hey mad120y, check out
my website
for info on L series into 1200 conversion.
