hey guys I'm having a bit of trouble,

I recently reformatted my computer to get rid of all my crap and start fresh, i have a dell computer and I installed windows xp off the disk I got with the machine only problem is it's an old version of Win XP pro so it's service pack one.

But I installed that and installed norton 2002 that came with my computer and then I'd install my modem to get back on the net but after I've installed I've installed the updates for norton my computer is going nuts and coming up with a virus detected it's called hacktool.rootkit so it's a trojan but when I click ok to fix it says file has been quarentined then about 10secs later same error message saying the same virus has been detected and quarentines it.

WTF is going on??? if I do a full system scan it says everything is fine and all my definitions are up to date, this is the second time I've reformatted to have the same problems!!!!!!

Can anyone help me with any info on what to do???

Cheers
Damo

Go to Symantec virus definition page, and locate the trogan removal instructions or removal software. Quite often a freshly installed Windows setup will get a trogan when first updated from the microsoft website.

also go and download Microsofts antispyware program, it has to be the best thing microsoft have done in quite a while...... they have finally wisened up to the fact their software is full of holes so they have created a pretty good spyware and adware removal tool without built in crap. plus it's free, just go to microsft.com and it's there, but also do what dattodevil said i was going to post that but he beat me to it

and get rid of Norton, its crap and even the updates dont work properally i have found...I used norton for 6 months (3months each, i reformat alot ) updating everyweek this was norton 2003. And it would always miss some things, like the stuff it was supposed to ppick up - VIRUSES!!!

Use AVG, AdAware, Spybot and Zone Alarm and you will never have to worry about spyware, viruses and naughty people hacking your comp again...
Zone alarm is a pain in the ass if you dont know how to use it, setting firewalls and IP addresses sux but one configured right it will never fail you!!

From what I understand the "trojan dropper" file is in program files/ midaddle. the only thing is when you try to remove it and click the that file it will say there is nothing in the file, and that you cannot delete the folder. there is a way to go ahead and get the specifc files to delete. to get the exact names do a search on google and from there will tell you how to remove the files. -e
