Can anyone tell me the difference between a CA18DET Black top & Red top engine.
Someone suggested it was a NISMO product & was similar to buying... say... a Tickford enhanced XR6.
Maybe it's the difference between Cast & Forged pistons as discussed on the "CA18 Build up" post.

Maybe you are thinking of SR20DET'S. There is no black top CA18DET to the best of my knowledge.

In SR's it is the difference between model S13 & S14. There are differences in ports only and VVT on late black tops.

What they said.

The only difference in CA18DET valve covers is their shape and vent placement which vary acc. to make model.

Bigger TB on black top SR20DET? Never heard that before. I'm guessing you mean S13 black top? The S14 black top has a smaller TB apparently.

yeah i was surprised to find the S14 throttle body and all port sizing on the inlet manifold were smaller that the S13.

all CA18DET motors are the same.

SR20DET's have a red and black top non vvt and a black vvt model with different injectors turbo's manifolds etc. on different ones. also there is a difference with the JDM s14 and s15.

I've never actually seen a "black top" motor, it's just that everyone asks that when I tell 'em it's a CA18.
