Thanks for the reply back... sorry guys i accidently posted a new thread well the plan would be to put in a CA18DET most probably from an s13... now the project would be done between me and my brother in law.. and still gathering information... we know that the SR20DET would be a strugle as we have been told that the gearbox wont fit and the chassi needs to be re design.. would a CA18DET be a straigh fit in with out any mayor issues...

For SR vs. CA
- Same gearbox, different bellhousing.
- SR intake plenum is a bit baulkier, can hit on clutch/brakes.
- SR is a little heavier
- SR is longer

It's still a tight fit. By no means a "straight fit".

Major issues include:
1. connecting hydraulic clutch
2. upgrading brakes
3. wiring
4. diff upgrade

In a manual gearbox equipped 1200, the gearbox is a VERY tight fit.

yeah dude,

its not to difficult to fit a ca18det.

trust e when i say get a front cut.

im doing my ca18det conversion in a 1200 coupe right now.

Im at the exciting stage of it almost being able to start.

The engine, providing you have the crossmember of the 1200 modified, fits in with ease.

make sure you get the engine as close to the firewall as possible an try an get the ca18 as low as possible from the crossmember. 2 finger spaces is the furthest away you should go.

the gearbox fits down the tunnel, no problem. It only touches at the gearstick spot.

just get a 4" grinder an cut the tunnel from the original hole back 200mm or so, you'll see when you get there.

Trial an error, thats how i did it.

You'll need to cover that hole after but thats easy. Bit of sheet metal an mig welder.

You can use the radiator from the front cut, the hydraulic clutch master cylinder an pedal, the throttle cable, the front brake setup fits with a bracket to allow for a different calliper an rotor.

I realise this is heaps of info, but trust me, its the tip of the iceburg. You can reuse heaps of things from the front cut.

Trust me when i say call Kevin Rowley on (07) 3814 4674. He's in queensland.

He knows his stuff.

sope this helps.

If it wasn't atleast a bit challenging everyone would do it.

I love it, its fun.

cheers

lil johnny these people are right in saying that the front cut is the go it is like they say theres heaps u can use but i disagree with gala hazard on the positioning of the motor u dont want it close to the fire wall like he states u want the sump as close the the sway bar as posssible with just enough room for your fingers between themnow i would think that if this GALAHAZARD knows kev so well he would know that kev makes his mounts so this is possible but he is right in saying ring him also get both ur cross members from him as this will put it where it should go word of addvise DONT by MAD DAT there engine xmembers are in the wrong place

Whats wrong with the Xmembers I make??? I have two that where made for 1200.com members sitting in my shed .
ACA18turbo why do you say keep the engine as close to the swaybar as possible?? I find if it sits back around 10-15mm off the firewall (around 30-40mm swaybar clearance is good for front pulley- radiator clearance ect also better weight distrubution.
I know kev Rowley quite well I have seen a fair bit of his work he is a autoelectrical guru
I havnt seen a maddat kit so cant coment I would be pretty sure his work would be top notch.

Hey there, Just go the MADDAT route, he has the simplest kits to make your conversion so easy. Ive got one in my 2 door sedan, Straight bolt in, no mess, no fuss. Cheers. Adam

Mate you didnt' have any trouble with the Maddat kit because you modified your tunnel before you even tried to fit the gearbox in it! The maddat kits definitely need tunnel mods even with the Stumpy gearbox.

Sure they work but it's not as simple as it sounds
