As suggested in the topic, my datsun has the death rattles. Its a wierd noise that sounds like the front wheel is going to fall off. I have checked the ball joints (replaced them) and wheel bearings (no play but didnt pull them apart - think theres my answer!)

Trouble is when you put your foot on the brake the noise disappears like it is wheel bearing play, but there is none there!
These are confusing symptoms to me.

Any suggestions?

So did you adjust the front wheel bearings or not?

A little on the right hand side, but thats it! There is no play there now and it still makes that blasted noise.

Loose brake pad?

When pressure goes on the pedal it holds it in place.

Maybe. . .

Castor rod bushes?

Found the problem last night, The wheel bearing cup is loose in the hub (i.e. hub worn) and when I adjusted the wheel bearing before, after about 5 min of driving it was loose again. Second hand 120Y hubs anyone???
