Well hi all been sitting catching up on what has been written here. The guy with the 240z has a great car and I wish him well but I have looked at all your pics here and you all should be proud of what you have built. I am after some help, I wish to buy a 1200 ute so will begin the horrid searching game but as they were made for such a lot of years what is the best type to look for sure they all look the same but what about vintage? any particular year better then others?? I am after a real good one and do understand it will cost that is why I hope your advice may help me choose wisely. Oh and of course if anyone has a micky mouse one for sale then please contact me.Thanks all.

With the utes condition is more important than age, as they are all the same and any upgrades like disk brakes can easily be fitted to early ones. If you are planning on hotting it up its often better to get one that is allready done as it will be cheaper in the long run.
Personally I dont know why you would want one I reckon the coupes are much cooler, and at least you can slide the seat back and get some leg room.

Thanks for the reply sidedraught. I do own a 1000 coupe but it is to small as a second vehicle so it is sitting in the garage. I no nothing about the utes I thought being small and reliable and the fact I have heaps of datsun bits and also being cheap to run. I never thought of the leg room though so thanks for the tip and will remember that when I find one. I would not be looking at hotting it up. Thanks mate

Good on you for owning a 1000 coupe, now there is a cool car.
sounds like the ute is the way to go then, they are incredibly practical and you will be surprised at just how much stuff you can haul around in them.

Speaking from 1st hand experience I reckon you should make sure the body (panels etc) of the ute you choose for your project is in as good as possible condition.
I bought my shell for a bit of a bargain at $1000, but 9 months down the track I am still finishing off the body work as the whole thing was riddled with cancer. I've had to cut & shut, replace panels..... the whole works.
In reality I saved myself some money, but in hindsight I DEFINITELY should have spent the extra cash & started with a good body.
Buying an already complete project is a good idea if you can find one. I searched for the best part of a year before I gave up & did my own. If people are selling, it's always for a reason - Some genuine, some not.
The only other thing is that the earlier model utes have a chrome grill which looks nice, but you should be able buy these aftermarket or at a wreckers & fit to a later model.
Good luck

Quote: In reality I saved myself some money, but in hindsight I DEFINITELY should have spent the extra cash & started with a good body I hear ya. I'm currently on the lookout for a stocker with a mint body (if there is such a thing) to save me doing the body on mine.
