Hi,

No idea on this one. A friend's A12 engine (datsun ute) is smoky on steep hills. Nowhere else. Downhills and on the flats not a whisper of smoke. Engine operates fine under all other conditions. Oil level is correct (checked myself). No noises etc just a fair bit of smoke (mostly white reportedly) when on a hill.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Brad

possibly oil coming out of the rear breather onto the exhaust? (blue rather than white)

white smoke is steam is it not? Is it using water?

apologies if that was no help to you whatsoever

I haven't seen it so I don't know whether it was steam or smoke. The (reasonably) reliable witness said it was out of the exhaust pipe.

Shrug...

Is it possible that it has a wrong dipstick that shows full when it is really overfull? This means that on a steep uphill, the oil can run back to the shallow end of the pan, allowing the crank to strike the oil, throwing it everywhere & overloading the rings on at least the back two cylinders.

Clutching at straws here fellers.

My first thought was "too much oil". An A12 only takes 3.6 liters of oil or less. Disregard what the dipstick says, drain it and put three liters or 3 quarts in and see if the problem disappears. The engine will run safely with 3 litres of oil.
