Hey guys,
a quick question and search for a suitable donor shaft. I need a 57mm dia shaft that had at some stage been mated to a H165 diff (or will accept the same uni). Does anyone have anything around?? I would rather shorten an existing shaft before making a new one - I can sidestep the balancing process this way. Yes, we have done this before and have the knowhow to make it happen - I am trying to find the easy way first Any help is greatly appreciated !!
Cheers

Mick King in Emu Plains is your best bet...he can custom make any tailshaft at a VERY reasonable price to Datsun owners....especially if its a race car.

Thanks Craig but we can make the whole thing ourselves too - I am trying to avoid doubling my lathe time and rebalancing. Lazy, basically!

can do.... and should do are two different things

Sometimes it's easier for someone with years of experience, boxes full of universal joints and flanges to do the job, all in the one spot, with a 24-48 hour turnaround.

This is something I've learned from my project.

I don't know about you..but if I had a swearing penalty jar...it would cost more than getting someone else to do the crappy jobs.

Machining and handling uni-joint flanges is a pain in the ass.

Chris

Top of bankstown..$160-$200. New uni joints and 2nd hand flanges, ready to install.

Hey Chris,
thanks for the info. I can see where you are coming from and generally agree - but if I have the machinery and the skill (or mates who have or can guide) I like to do as much as I can myself. It is sometimes more than the finished product, the learning and challenge are often just the therapy to balance modern life
As it turns out I was unbelievably lucky this time. A fellow datsun enthusiast offered a spare 720 ute tailshaft he didn't need and it fits Kept one flanged end and swapped the other for the b/b yoke. Some measuring and investigation was required regarding uni's but all is well and installed without cutting or welding. Talk about happy Now for some springs and off to the dyno for the big tune - hope to be pleasantly surprised.
Cheers
