At a wrecking yard a few weeks ago we came across an A15 datsun motor which we picked up and paid $30 for, when we got it home and had a closer look at it it was a very different A15, it had no hole in the block for the clutch cable to go thru, it had no place for the starter motor, it had an adaptor plate thingo on it, it had a clutch which had 3 spring loaded prong things on it and hte clutch worked backwards also the manifolds bolt onto the block in the same spot but then they run downwards whick means the fuel has to be sucked up into the engine. what could this be

i took photos of everything but i duno how to put them up :(

I have never seen an A series with a hole for the clutch cable or a mount for a starter motor. Both these are on the gearbox.

try photobucket.com and then use the IMG button just above the dialog box when you reply and paste the url from photobucket that you uploaded.
Its easier than I make it sound

The manifolds bolt to the cylinder head on either a J15 or an A15, not the block, & if it uses an updraught carb, then it is likely to be an industrial engine, quite possibly from a fork lift.
