It is a dogleg, and rare as hen's beaks.

For more details, including pics, see the tech section article: 5-Speed Overview

It should be sweet behind the A12, it wont handle too much rough treatment behind an A15 though.

I wouldn't risk that jewell behind an A14. Even Datsun didn't use them behind A14s, they used the stronger 60-series transmission.

The 56A gearbox has a lot going for it & you will love it once you get the hang of the gearshift pattern. [about 10 minutes] It has a nice low takeoff gear, then four closely spaced ratios that are an absolute delight to use.

It will handle some quite spirited driving as it was built for the 'performance' model, the GX, but was not built to handle outright abuse. Mine has lasted over 20 years & an awfull lot of miles, & the plan is to major overhaul it, & use it again behind my engine of over 1400cc.
Treat it like a woman,... with a firm hand, but don't be abusive or rough & it will deliver the next best thing to sex.
Well,.. OK, three or four steps down from sex, but still pretty good.
