Been busy today squeezing a 450x300x65 intercooler into the front of my 1200.

Had to cut out the stock radiator mounting section to gain every mm of clearance.

Still need to trim metal sheeting to ensure airtight connection of front panel and radiator, and tack weld it in. Respray the front panel black, and respray the engine bay side black too.

By using some square tube and good selection of flutes in the panelwork, it will be stronger than factory. And maximum amount of air will make it through the radiator and intercooler.

Not a simple job, but with 25psi plans..it'll need all the intercooler it can get.

Hope it inspires others to 'just do it'.

It took a lot of courage to start cutting into my front panel, but it's all going well.

Cheers,
Chris

Chris,

Why dont you look at Marks water injection kit. He is claiming 2 psi extra boost, way lower inlet temps and much lower weight and saves truckloads of space due to having the kit.
So much so that he has done away with the intercooler altogether.

Hmm, 450x300 is a little small. However most bigger ones are massive overkill, so it will be interesting to see. The fact that your turbo is not tiny will help too.

Best thing to do is put a temperature probe before and after the intercooler, so you can see what situations it works in and doesn't work in. I once had a Pulsar that had too small an intercooler and a intake temperature on the dash was a great tool. I also found on this car that a simple water spray on the cooler was great for dropping temps.

Anyway, it looks really good. One of the neatest installs I've seen.

Yeah if it gets too hot, water injection will be the next move.

But water injection is another thing to have to consider on long trips. I'd like that to be 'icing on the cake' rather than the only thing cooling the intake.

Besides it's a bit late now to change my mind. And thanks to China's underpaid labour, the Intercooler was only $180, so why not.

If I get the front panel work finished next weekend, I'll start on installing some 270degree tomei cams/springs/retainers, so I can measure up the valve lifter shims.

So this is work on the Datsun Month.. except for easter

My dad looked at the TIG welds on the intercooler, and he said, "I could weld as nice as that" ..I quickly informed him that his competition was probably an 11 year old.

Looks great, I hope i can get mine hidden as well as that.

Mine just came in the mail earlier this week.

cant believe they make them for the price they do. I opted for the 2.5" fittings as i assumed both turbo and tb were smaller than 2.5". I've thaught about it since and prob should have got the 3".

Anyway nice work, what turbo u running?

you guys are talking about the Just Jap cooler right?
i got one and put it in the other week fits so nice, just like the one in the pic, granted my car is not as nice though.
i got 3inch end pipes but am planing on reducing it to 2.5 or 2 before the cooler and leaving it 3 after the cooler to reduce spool-up time.

I think it's N12 Pulsar "Light Green" with metalflake in the door openings and other internal surfaces, and non-metalflake same green with 'white ice' in clear coat on outside panels.

It's a Nissan Factory colour from the early->mid eighties.

Just got it off a Nissan colour swatch, and been happy about the decision ever since.

Chris

I'm running the 2.5inch inlet/outlet. It's not a truck, 3 inch is too laggy. Probably the same as the JustJap Coolers except I got it from the Sydney-based guys at Nexcent: http://www.nexcentpp.com .
