Todays Supersprint meet at Wakefield Park seems to have been one of those days that just went right.

There were two Sports sedans that looked the goods, the first of which was a 1200 Coupe that used a mid mounted V6 from some other manufacturer, but it went well anyway. I thought that a grille would help to complete the picture.

The second was a 1968 Datsun 1000 two door with mid mounted A15. It sounded great but its times didn't reflect it. It ran 1 minute, 11.6 seconds, which I thought was good, but not great for that class of car.

Next we had young Curlewis. The first three runs were plagued by a mysterious missfire that occurred after reving it right out in third, & shifting into fourth. He overcame this problem after disconecting the malfunctioning rev limiter.
He was able to improve his time from 1-23.7 down to 1-20.4. You could hear this car during it's whole trip around the track as he wrung it's neck for all it was worth & it ran clean & crisp for the rest of the afternoon. Those tyres are old & hard, but he gave quite a few in his group a run for their money & showed them what an old pushrod Datsun could do, much to their dismay.
With all the practice that he got, his driving style improved noticeably too. This is one young man to be encouraged.

When it comes to the Boss, well he had a good day too. After improving his previous best time of 1-13.35 down to 1-12.00 he was bumped up to the next fastest class & now he had someone to chase. This resulted in a new time of 1-11.61, the same as the little 1000 sports sedan with the same engine.

Congratulations must go to the organisers as they had the whole day down pat. There was an almost unheard of four runs each for all five classes by lunchtime & we lost count during the afternoon but I think the Boss got in another five during the afternoon & passed up on one more, & we all went home well before dark. An absolutely surperlative effort from the officials & a great day for everyone.

Appreciate the informative summary - great to see plenty of 1200's/1000's still on the track. I'm looking forward to adding mine to the fray!

Great report Dodgeman!
Pity I couldn't make it but spent the day pulling the head off the L20 AGAIN
Great result for the boys - lloks like they are starting to get some confidence. 'The Boss' - well what can I say ......... unbeatable on his home track 1:11 is outstanding for that car - IPRA front runners do 1:09 ish and they are "spare no expense" cars. I am stunned I fear I will never catch him
Well done to all !!
Cheers

I don't know how much the day was for drivers, because I don't race, but since it isn't an advertised 'open to the public' kind of day, there is no-one at the gate to collect spectator fees. Just drive on in & mingle with the racers.

It was a great day with great organisation. Even the officials were rotated so that they all got lunch without a break in the competition. If you were competing & wanted lunch, then bite big & chew fast while waiting in the line.
For me, the total cost was ... fuel money, plus lunch from the 'restaurant'. That left me with change from $20. Best value in town.

Jeff, sorry to hear that you needed to do more work on your engine. It just sounded so well on the start line last week.
Yesterday [Sunday] was just one of those days. It had rained fairly heavily on the Friday, & that gave the track a good wash & removed all the fine sand & dust. The day was generally sunny with plenty of clouds that seemed to steer their way around the sun & left us mostly in sunshine. The air was nice & cold, but the breeze was gentle, so we didn't freeze, but the engines really appreciated the cold air.
Because the track was clean, tyres got a better grip & times fell, causing tyres to work harder, & heat up more, giving even better grip etc. etc.
This is what happened with Aidan in the 1200 sedan. He was racing on his own, so he got to drive the whole day instead of sharing. Once the missfire problem was solved, he became a young man on a mission & gave it all it had. This heated up the tyres nicely & when he came in after his best run of the day, they were nowhere as cold or as hard as before. It was a performance that brought a tear to a crusty ol' bugger's eye. You would have been cheering him on too.

As for the Boss, well he said it himself, he needed someone to chase, to really get that competitive adreneline rush, & when he was pushed up into the faster group, he was no longer the bigger fish in the smallish pond, so he focused on the blue 1200 Sports sedan. With it's mid mounted 3.8L V6, it outran him of course, but it had the right effect of helping to drag the last ounce of performance from the little A15 & its driver.
Amazing.

Dodgeman,
finally got to listen to the video footage yesterday - oooohh yeah But the water/oil issue remains, so pressure test of the head is planned (and a few other things while I'm there )
To run 1:11 out there I suspect the boss gets about 5 years from a set of brake pads - 'cause he sure is'nt slowing down too often
Cheers

Sorry to read that you still have issues with this engine after all the work, but in the end, it's still a machine, so ailments can be diagnosed & fixed, & once this is done, it will be all that you want it to be. I just know it.

I hear tell that Benny is giving his car a tune up or something in an attempt to keep up with the pack. He should be able to find a way to get just a few more horses to push it along. With a bit of luck we will see Mildman included amongst a whole bunch of small Datsuns on the track together & at the front of the pack.

I look forward to seeing some of that video footage someday. If the sound came through, as I think it did, then it will be something to keep for the grandchildren.

Matty
The day's racing cost $160, plus of course all the usual transporting & running costs.

The published results have come through & it looks like the 'Boss' took the class 3A record [up to 1600cc] for this track twice on Sunday. First with the 1:12.00 run, then again with the 1:11.61 time. With times like these in this car, it's no wonder the 'secret weapon's' construction is progressing at an unhurried pace.

Young Aiden in the 1200 sedan is also coming third in the point score. He's not real fast yet, but he's there at every event. [so far] Sometimes it pays just to turn up.

Hey Chris,
thanks for the encouragement. Footage is underway (software from Dog160 would help !!) but soon we should be able to get it happening. Good news for Aiden - to finish first you must first finish - so he is on track to a good result. Don't think I will bother hitting the track when the new weapon is finished
Cheers
