Before I put my motor back in...

I have a quick question on the spigot bush. (We refer to it as a pilot bearing here in the States)

I replaced mine, and soaked it in oil prior to installing it. The manual says to apply some grease to it, but there was no grease on either of the bushes on the two A12 motors I have.

It's my understanding that these bushes are impregnated with oil. I have also heard that coating it with grease will stop up the self-oiling properties of them, and possibly cause problems down the road.

Grease or oil? Does anybody know for sure?

Thanks!

The bearings are 'sintered bronze' where they heat and squash together thousands of little balls to create a porous bearing.

Grease would be used depending on the conditions it was operating in. Kind of similar to oil viscosities in engine oil.

As it's a press fit, I can't see any real use for the grease. Unless other bearings are stuffed, the pilot bearing doesn't do a lot of work.

People use grease to pop the bearing out sometimes. But I cant see a reason for the layer of grease.

Not a big deal. Soak in engine oil for an hour/overnight and install.

I had never heard of soaking it in oil until recently right here in the Forum.

Here's what the Nissan factory A12 manual says:Quote:
Clean the clutch pilot bushing, and fill it with multi-purpose grease.
That's how I've always done it, and I've never had one go bad.
