well, it didn't last a week on 16psi, in fact it hardly ever hit 16psi cause i was short shifting a lot, i was gonna turn the boost down this weekend, but the rings have given up first

-to just put another stock block in and limit to 10psi??

-to build a strong a-series block capable of 15psi??

-to go CA18??

-or sell up the 1200s and put the 20valve in the corolla

lifes questions..............

on another note i tried a 3.7:1 diff, massive top end, stuff all acceleration, trying to decide.... to go back to 4:1 for awesome acceleration with top speed in fifth of about 160, or go in between with a 3.9:1

Both of them sound good, but I'd say go with the CA as much as I do like a turbo A series.

just rebuild with a set of low comp pistons, 16psi doesnt sound right but, if it was properly tuned shouldve been fine, maybe your engine was leaning out at that sort of boost????

Or you could pull the engine & overhaul it. That way you are dealing with fresh rings in a freshly honed bore, & you will know during the teardown if you have suffered a piston meltdown. If so, then you can take steps to ensure that it is prevented from happening again. [more boost retard, higher octane fuel, less boost, water injection, richer mixture & possibly even forged pistons.]
16psi seems to be quite a lot of boost for the original cast pistons with a 9, or 9.5 to 1 compression ratio.

If you simply use another second hand stock block, all you are doing is re-installing all the same mistakes.
10psi sounds much more reasonable to me & to be blunt, I would try it out at 7psi for a while. Higher boost gives higher performance, but replacing engines every week gets really old really fast.

When you have it running again, you can come visit & bring all my stuff with you. That way you can run it in & enjoy my hospitality while visiting some of the best countryside in the land.

P.S. You would benefit from the 3.7 diff for this trip.

I think its time you just went a CA Rallycar, you have been wanting to do it for ages, there reliable cost effective, you will get easy 230+bhp and up on a fresh CA, and wont worry about winding boost up on them everynow and then. I think for your overall happinesses and sanity go a CA, because i know it cant be fun changing the asseries out every week, gearboxes etc etc... making a Aseries reliable on 15psi and making resonable horsepower will cost a Arm and a leg and it wont get the horsepower a CA will and the reliabilty and driveability.

As much as I love Aseries, you know you have been wanting a CA for ages, they have all the qualities you have been wanting for ages too mike

time for you to go ca... or just try and get a deal on 20valve for the rolla and 20 vavle for the ute too... do something different as you always tend to do!

I like the a series turbo but i think your chasing too much power for the engines sake. (i know the 16psi was not planned, just spiking).

have you thought of just using one turbo now too, t28's go for a song now... especially non rollerbearing types...

i'll just ask you one question... how much ####ing around are you prepared to do to keep this a series turbo obsession??? how many years and dollars and hours labour have you spent to get 70 rwkw and engine failure after engine failure. for ####'s sake man... go the CA!!!!!!!!!!

unfam is right, you're chasing too much power from the wrong motor. either that or settle for a little less power, a lot less fun, but unfortunately a lot less individuality aswell.

as for 16psi, i seriously doubt wether the little huffers could produce that much, and if they did, it would be very hot unpowerproductive air. even if you upgraded to a more efficient turbo like a $150 t25 then your reliability would at least increase and you could continue to blow rings/rattle flywheels loose/ blow up gearboxes etc.

the obvious choice has been turkey slapping your forehead for a while now...

ps front wheel drive??? you've got to be kidding!
