There are quite a number of people who have successfully bored these out to 79mm. That's 3mm or about .120" over standard. At this size, the metal between the end pairs of cylinders is getting a bit thin & for performance use, 'O' ringing the block is recomended.
Offseting the bores to try to keep this gap from shrinking too much is also a good idea, but if you are planing to run a street engine, then my personal recomendation is to keep it down to 77.5mm which is the third & largest stock oversize of 1.5mm

If you plan on a balls to the wall engine, then do it on an A15.

$2000 and up for the engine alone .... thats no bolt on bits - flywheel, clutch, exhaust, carbs, dizzy etc ....... all comes down to what you want at the end of the day ?? with the A series engines there's good value in big work on the head for flow and good balancing in the bottom for revs

edit. just found a quote for an A15 build i got a couple months back ....... wait for it .................. $2500 for the bottom end ......... and for the head ...... $1600. this was a good price and was happy to go with it but then a couple unforseen costs came up else where so the pin was pulled on the A15 upgrade ... for a while

If you want to go with the A14, add the big pistons mentioned and use a larger-stroke crank from an A15.

It will cost less to buy a rebuilt A15 shortblock, and will give you more CCs than a bored A14. You can use all the other parts you already accumulated. So there's really no downside to going to the new block.

I got a quote for honing an A15 block, fitting flat top ".020 oversize pistons, king bearings also ".020 oversize for machined crank mains and big end journals, balanced bottom end and also fitting my new camshaft.....$2600 for the bottom end alone!
I bought an A14 head which was a NOS item with huge intake ports, new valves, valve stem seals and performance valve springs with twin mikuni sidedraughts and the camshaft for $1250 which I thought was cheap.
It's the things I didn't calculate due to it being my first build up that caught me out, stuff like new sprockets, water pump, oil pump, electric fuel pump, pressure regulator, distributor, coil, extractors and exhaust system, radiator, thermo fan, diff upgrade, brake upgrade strut ugrade, big wheels and tyres to fit bigger brakes etc
It feels like I upgrade one thing then I have to change something else to make the upgrade work properly......But I love it because I am a sucker for punishment!
