Repairing heater

I'm trying to get my heater working. (Mainly for the defroster)

The blower motor doesn't work, and according to the manual the fuse is also the same fuse for the washer, wiper, and heater. The wipers work fine, so I will assume that the fuse is good. My 1200 has dealer-installed a/c, so the fuse box is very hard to get to.

I assume I can run 12 volts directly to the blower motor to test it out, so that shouldn't be too hard to troubleshoot.

The manual says to run water through the water inlets to test for a clog. If clogged, can a radiator shop repair the heater core? Do I disconnect the hoses and run water from a garden hose through it?

I'm not so sure I really *need* the blower as long as the warm air is coming through the vents, but if it's bad, can a motor rewinding service fix it?

Thanks for any advice. The manual is somewhat sparse on heater troubleshooting and repair. I've never dealt with a heater repair before..

I dont think they are to complex. Flush it an see if water comes through make sure you have the switch inside on heat as it opens a valve which allows water to flow from the engine into the heater core.

next try the electrical side of things if the fan isnt working you can run 12v to it. Test the switch as well as the fuse (not sure what circuit the fan is on??)
probly not much help but any way

you should also look at the reostat, it is fitted to the side of the heater box, it changes the voltage to the motor for the 2 speeds

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to take it apart and see what I can figure out this weekend.

because i didnt want to make a hole new thread for the same subject.... my heater blows air on fast and slow and everything is fine EXCEPT the fact that no matter how hot the engine it only blows cold air...

is it the valve blocked (switchworks fine) or a blockage in the heater hose or sumthing else internal ? any help.
dont mean to hijack thread either

No problem! Anything related to heaters is a big help to me. I've never had to fix one before, and both the motor and (apparently) the core in mine is bad. Any info is good info!

My guess is that heater tap is all rusted up thats why no hot water is getting to the heater core.
I had my core pressure tested at a rdiator shop, I was hoping he could recore it as it basically a small radiator, no go he said not possible but I know it can be done.
cheers ade

Note that the blower motor should run whether or not the core is blocked. The fan motor is not dependent on coolant flow or temperature. You put it ON, it should blow air.

If it blows cold air all the time, I can think of several possibilities:
1. Heater is not hooked up (hoses from back of head and left side of engine goes through firewall)
2. The tap/cock is closed. There is a cable connected to the lever on the dashboard to control this
3. The core is corroded and therefore not flowing much water.

The latter is what the garden hose test is for. But first you gotta make sure the tap (under the dash inside) is open. Then disconnect the two hoses under the hood and see if water will flow throught them.

Thanks. I know the two are seperate components, and I have the double whammy. No heat, and no blower motor. I am going to try to check out the blower portion of it this week. I'm hoping it might be a defective switch , fuse, or other problem and not a bad motor.

I have a good radiator shop and they said if the core can't be repaired, they can actually make me a new one. They quoted a rough price for this, and it's not too expensive. I'm hoping they can repair the origina if necessaryl.

The hassle with my car is it has the underdash a/c and the console. Both units have to come out before I can even see the heater box.
