The label on the controller says "infrared transistor". So it's a photo-op controller, rather than a hall-effect.

It should work as well as the stock Nissan electronic ignition. The MSD Blaster shown is a high energy coil.

are they as relaible as the electric dizzs. I thought they were ment to have better spark contorl in higher rpm range?

im intrigued by it as i have never seen anything like this before for an a series... any further info for the photo op controler set up?

You may be thinking of Capacitance Discharge (CD) ignition systems. These make high-powered multiple-sparks. Though CD usually comes in a finned box, I believe this one here is just a standard transistor controller, similar to OEM (original equipment) systems.

The optical sensor detects the teeth of the rotor turning (you can see it in the photo). So there is no cam to wear out. This is not much different than Hall Effect or magnetic-pulse distributor sensors like in the 80s Nissans. It is just a sensor, and much better than using mechanical points which burn out over regular use (about 12 months).

that's one of the simplest optical units i've ever seen. later ones had the CAS integrated. It looks like you could do interesting things to the spark duration by changing the width of the blades.

I had more problems with the optical ones getting mucked up and stopping working way more often than the magnetic ones.

i recommend, use a mag pickup dizzy and add on a CDI unit or something if you want ignition fun.

anyone found an easy way to add a CAS to an A series?
