Sealent on Main caps??

Just rebuilding an A12 at the moment and one of the steps of put on the main bearing caps is to apply sealent on the between the block an the cap. Is this nessary an why??

I have only ever applied a small amount on the rear main cap, around the area wher the rear main seal is located.

You dont want to put anything between the main caps and block, but on the rear cap like benny said you want to put some silicone there to stop any oil leaking.
