QLD roadworthy issues

Gday all and happy new year.

I am just inquiring into QLD road worthy stuff. I put my datto 1200 ute over the pits the other day by a reputable mob up here in Townsville. They picked up a few things that where common sence things I had to fix. Things like washer bottle missing, front right indicator not working etc. They also picked up stupid things like missing piece of door trim (little crome thing that goes behind the door handle) missing inspection plate in tray (was removed to repair lights and not replaced by me). I questoned the receptionest and was told that everything on the list had to be fixed to pass roadworthy. I cant see why these things affect the road worthy state of the ute but I have fixed them, about 10 minutes work. What I am getting at is that is there a place to call to inquire about these problems, main reason for this is they picked up a chip in the windscreen no bigger than a 5 cent piece on the lower pasanger side. It in no way affects my vision and does not leak. Do I need to replace my windscreen or just let it be. They also pinged me for rust bubbles in the sills, not broken throught the paint and biggest patch is about the size of a small mobile phone.I just need to know if they are having me on and if there is someone I can speak too about the actual legal requirements. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

If you don't wan't to name the name of that mech may you pm me with it. As for the rest of that I really think it's dependant on the inspector.

Is you're windscreen one of the safe lami-panel ones? pretty sure they go by the Temperlite name or something if it is. With the rust it's probly cos the boys in blue released that campaigne to crack down on "bombs" and such , yeah

Had something else to say but forgot now so I'll say, Yeah..... again

I can't really speak for the QLD regs but any chip in the windscreen is a hazard because it weakens the structural integrity of the glass - something else that would normally otherwise bounce off the screen may now shatter it.

I'd replace the screen - it's still cheap enough to do. Hell I can even say that for my 1000 coupe

Cheers,

TC

I might give the main roads a call and see if there is someone I can speak too about some of the problems.

I think the problem may be that you turned up for inspection with no washer bottle and the blinker not working. You say they were common sense things. Its something you should have sorted to start with.
If you turn up with obvious problems, more likely than not, they will go over the car with more attention to detail.
If as you say, the workshop is 'reputable' They won't take the risk that you get pulled over as you drive out the driveway and get done by the cops.
The windscreen issue is a bit harsh, but they have the right to defect it if they think its a problem. They probably picked the door handle chrome because its something easy to do but looks a lot better than without. Same with the inspection panel.
Sill rust is structural. The sill is a structural part of a datsun 1200. That small patch will grow to a decent hole once you dig it out and clean it up for repair. Put metal in its place.
Finally if you want a roady done nice and easy, its gunna cost you, And you have to know someone. The government is pretty harsh on businesses that do shoddy inspections, these guys have to pay for repairs to cars that are found to be faulty after inspection as well as pay a huge fine and lose their certification. At least you only have to do it once in QLD and not every year like in NSW

I went through something similar years ago while trying to have a Subaru Bratt road worthy.
I am far away from Australia, but my impresion here with the Subaru was one of a mechanic that had some personal issues and vented his frustration on people like me that came over for the inspection.
I understand a signal light out of order or a cracked windshield , but inside panels and rust.....it is not a beautty contest, but a worthiness issue.

There should be a place where these adamant mechanics/ examiners could be written down for acting beyond the scope of their duties.

These people should be evaluated constantly to verify that attitude is not becoming prevalent. Any position that deals with the public carries responsability and skill is required to exercise unbiased judgement.
