That would be 18 degrees @ ??? rpm.
Do you have the vacuum advance function operational? If so, is it connected when adjusting the timing?

no vac advance when setting, at 1100rpm it pings above 25 and will not run under 18

My old man told me to set it just before it pings, sounds logical i spose...

I have no idea what mine is. I have a pulsar dizzy and a A10 timing cover on the A12 so there is 1 mark on the cover and several on the balancer... stupid idea!

At that engine speed, some of the mechanical advance has already kicked in, so your reading will be different if it was possible to bring the revs back to the 650rpm.
At this speed, the stock distributors mechanical advance has returned to zero & this is the reference point that they use for specifying the setting.

If your engine will not run below 18 degrees @1100 rpm, then that's where you need to set it as a starting point for experimenting.

My 1200 is stock & I set it at 8 degrees at 600 rpm.

mechanical advance starts at 1300\1400 and finishes at 3000\3500

my engine has 1mm overbore,shaved a15 head,cdi,lumpy cam,twin 45mm dellortos,

and the other day (week ago) got a new exhaust with heaps more flow and before i got it fitted the timing was a 16 at 1100rpm and as soon as i left the exhaust shop it started backfiring so now its set to 20\22 degrees

Ummmm, OK, but apparently others have a different opinion. According to my manual, the following is true.

Mechanical advance data only.
Distributor model .......................

Hitachi D412- 53 starts 450 rpm & is at maximum of 12 degrees @ 1,300 rpm.

Mitsubishi TVA- 4FI L. Zero to 1.8 deg @ 500 rpm, 6.7 to 9.5 deg @ 1,000 rpm & 11 to 13 deg @ 1,300 rpm.

Hitachi D411- 61 starts 547 rpm to a maximum of11.5 deg @2,400 rpm.

Hitachi D412- 63 starts 550 rpm to a maximum of 12.5 degrees @ 2,100 rpm

These are all distributors for Datsun 1000 & 1200 models & all start their mechanical advance between 450 & 550 rpm.

This is at great variance to your claims so, what is the source of your information?
