I thought that we had this conversation a little while back
The 56 series trans has the ball bearing at the front of the cluster while the 56A used the small, closed end, torrington needle race.
Some of the gears were made a little wider to increase strength too.
I never did figure out if the 'L' was of any particular significance in the 56 series of gearboxes.
'L' for long would be used if there was a shorter version of the extention housing in one of these gearboxes, but as far as I can tell, there was no short version. All of the 3 speed, 4 speed & 5 speed 56 & 56A gearboxes were the same overall length.
There is a wealth of info in
This thread, however, it should be regarded as a work in progress & updated occasionally.
The following is a quote from that thread.

The F4W56A is a revised version of the F4W56L mounted on the B110 series. Modifications have been made on the following points to strengthen the gears and bearings, and to improve lubrication performance as well as noise and vibration proof at high-speed driving.
(1) Strengthened gears and bearings: Although there is no change in the gear ratio, each gear has an increased width by 0.039 to 0.079 (1 to 2 mm) and the countershaft, front bearing and main shaft bearing are strengthened.
(2) Improved lubrication performance: To ensure proper lubrication in the rear extension bushing, an oil dam is installed in the center of the extension.
