Hey i have converted a dato 1200 sedan to a ca18det datsun sedan(can post pics) and am almost finished i just cant get engine running. It seems im getting no spark but i know there current going to the igniter pack. Can this be caused from low voltage from faulty wireing eg bad earth or something like timing giving me weak spark? Thanks alot

Do you have ignition voltage to ECU during start?
If battery voltage less than 9v coils won't fire.
12v to middle pins of coils?
CAS got 12v?
Earth for ignitor transistor pack?
Does fuel pump relay have 12v during start?
Got the fuel lines connected the right way?
Got earth for the coil packs?
No blown fuses?

These are a few things I've seen over the years.

Seems to be getting no spark, have you actually pulled a plug out with teh coil on top and eathing it to the head while cranking, do you see a spark??
Better yet, pull out the CAS turn the ignition to ON and spin the CAS you should hear clicking noises from the injectors (it's best to disconnect your fual pump before doing this) you should be able to see the plugs firing as well.

When you actually crank it and it doesn't start pull out a plug is it wet?? If so then it's spark problem, if it isn't then it's prolly an injector problem, the thing I did when I first connected up my ECU to my CA was hook the ECU's ignition wore up to an ACC wire (the previous owner changed the wiring) so everything would seem fine then come time to crank it, the ECU would turn off. Once to key was back to ON it would power up again.

Are you using a stock ECU?? IF so doest it display error codes (codes are given in a series of LED flashes)???

LEt me know your findings

Cheers
Damo

Thanks for your eager help. To Demojob I have tried earthing it but i dont see any spark. I do hear the injectors opening and the plugs are soaked in fuel when i take them out so fuels all sweet. Its not a stock ecu either but i know its wired correctly cause its not ressetting or anything stupid. Thanks

To dattodude i have ecu voltage batterys brand new. So no trouble there also new plugs. the 12v to the middle pins of coils? is that constant 12v? CAS is all sweet and working also ignitors all earthed and fuel pumps fine and coil packs are earthed. My ecu says each ignition wire should fire up to 5v to the ignitor pack. It does between 3 and five. Is that a problem? Thanks alot guys.

Not sure if this is any help, but my ca18det had been sitting for a while and when i went to start it up it would tick but not turn over. So i spoke to my mechanics and they said try using a truck battery to start it. I pulled the battery out of my step dads 4wd connected it up and it started after a couple of attempts. The average car battery just wouldn't do it, guess it just needed more cranking amps.

Yes , 12v at ign and start position at centre pin on each coil connector. Black/Yellow wire. The 12V feed should terminate through a condensor to earth to stop high voltage spikes breaking the ECU..

A problem with Datto 1600s, is that the start position does not hold the 12v ignition wire. It stops 12v to the ign during crank.

For ignitor:

5pin connector:
1-4 are inputs from ECU
5 is earth
4pin connector:
6-9 are coil outputs.(They make the coil dump to the plug)

Got CAS connected? If that's miswired, you will get nothing for ignition.

pins 41/42 on the ECU are for CAS. You are looking for 12v at the pin3 on the cas. See diagram.

detecting the CAS signals for cylinders for 180degree and 1 degree are harder to check for without an oscilliscope.

You could get the parts and try this test circuit from Zoom magazine.

You might have also flooded it too. It is possible if the TPS has been 'adjusted' without following the factory workshop manual (s13 PDF). Any adjustment to the TPS means running the modeIII or IV tests to check it's set properly (can't remember which ECU test mode).

Thanks alot for your help. Im gona try wire up a condensor and the 12v and see what that does. Does the condensor and 12v get wired to the plug from the coils with the 2 wires sticking out of it? Cheers
