I want to get new dizzy leads. I think the ones on my car are the original ones.

Anyway are the bosch leads you get from supercheap etc. as good as any? Any good (non-cosmetic) reason for getting fancy ones?

Car is fairly stock and likely to remain so for at least a while.

Whats wrong with the leads you have now, the originals are very good and last a long time.

Mildman, your listing doesnt say which brand of dizzy the components are for, for example, points GH203 is for a Hitachi distributor, GL19V would be a lucas, I wonder what sort of dizzy GH210 points are for? The Bosch listing at supercheap auto has what brand the dizzy is.

Cheers
Sean

Im getting a misfiring / flat spots at around 3000rpm.

Just trying to work through stuff systematically to see if it helps. New leads are about $30 so i figure that is not a big cost to eliminate that a source of the problem (guess i could just borrow some) . And figured that it couldn't hurt to change 33yo leads.

But open to any suggestions of course, because I'm not the most knowledgeable car guy in the world.

I've replaced cap, points, condenser and rotor with the items in the list above (except they sold me a jr517 rotor) as they all looked pretty shagged.

Tuned it to spec, except car runs like poo below 11 degrees so thats what my timing is set at.

Car is a 74 120y sedan.

How is it running bad?

Have you got the mix right? What about plugs?

How did you set the points?

Not running too bad. Just an occaisional flat spot under load at 3K rpm. And timing seems to need to be a bit advanced than spec.

Mix was adjusted quick and dirty without vac meter, but seems ok. Plugs are nice orange colour. Mix was muuuch richer (several turns) when i got it and plugs were well fouled.

Plugs not changed but appear ok and gap was in spec.

Points set with dwell meter to about 50 degrees. Weird thing is that the gap is smaller than spec. I chose to go with dwell meter measurement. Still scratching my head on that one.

Some things i haven't done:
- haven't checked compression
- haven't screwed around with carby much or inspected it (apart from idle, and mix, and replace vacuum advance hose)
- havn't checked valve gap

Edit: The car also pings a little under load with ordinary unleaded, but not at all with 95 octane.

Yeah i find with my partners (car is auto so has to be spot on) I get a flat spot between the primary and secondary, I had the timing advanced and this seemed to go away.

Wasnt until I nutted it out with a mech friend and we discovered the dizzy wasnt advancing enough due to the vacuum canister being worn out, $30 at nissan and I got a new one, all is well these days, flat spot is long gone. Also check the link between the primary and sec, secondary should start open when primary is open around 5.5-6mm.
