If you were fishing, & customarily put the hook between your lips to hold it while geting another prawn, then you would probably have baited breath by the end of the day, but if you hold your breath [while waiting], or 'abate' your breathing, you would be waiting with bated breath, ... with appologies to Colin Bates.
