Does it cause understeer because its wider than the front?

yeh I think so. Wider rear=understeer and wider front=oversteer?

plenty of opinions on that if you search. Its not legal but it can make an underpowered car more fun (or less fun depends how you look at it)

the main influence on the handling will be from the locker. Lock a standard width diff (and do nothing else) and it will understeer like a pig.

On a track car a locked diff can be made to work very well. Look at V8 Supecars for example...

Depends on why you want to lock it.
As I understand it one reason to lock it is so that when you put power down during a corner , the power goes to both wheels evenly whereas an open diff will spin the inside wheel if you put power down when cornering. And secondly they can be useful if you are drag racing , Once again the power goes evenly to both wheels, whereas an open diff will have you lighting up one tyre and the other one going nowhere. (If you have the power to do it)
You have to keep in mind that locking the diff will change the whole driving dynamic of the car. At low speeds the cornering will suffer .
As mentioned previously it is also illegal to lock a street car diff. A limited slip diff is a much better option (but you try and find one). It will lock under power but free wheel around most corners.
