hey guys. is a coupe box a 56A? i blew up the gearbox in the yellow ute the other day(56A). so i went to a mate and he said he had a box i could use. he said it was out of a coupe. its got no markings on it. so i installed it. just about everything lined up good. but the clutch pedal was REAL tight. and the yoke had no back and forth play in it. it was pushed right up tight to the gearbox.

anyway. i used the the spring, fork and bearing out of the the blown box. it looked in better condition. but it didnt work at all. i could put it in gear and let the clutch out and it wouldnt move forward anywhere. so i pulled the box out today and looked at the spring and it seems alot smaller than the 56a box one? would this have anything to do with it? or should i just suck it up and get new bearing in the other gearbox?

any help would be appreciated. thanks.

My guess is you haven't fitted the prongs on the fork return spring properly and this will be pushing the thrust bearing to far forwards. Make sure the spring ends are holding the thrust bearing and not just sitting behind it.

56A is std 1200/120Y/Sunny box although 120Y onwards have slightly wider gears (and other internal differences), larger hole where for different clutch cable, and different casing appearance (mounts the same though).

56 boxes have the ribbed pattern on the side of the box and the bell housing looks a tad different. They came out behind all A12's, A14/15s had the larger 60 series to handle the extra torque.

Sometimes the thrust bearing can be put in the wrong way and the fork doesnt engage it properally, also as Fandatstick (cool name btw) said the springs need to be aligned rite in the lil holes/grooves as they slip off if not...

pesky lil buggers they are!

Both Datsun 1000's & 1200's use their own version of the 56 gearbox. It was updated for the B210 [120Y] & became the 56A gearbox. This was carried into the B310 [Sunny] models in Australia in models that used the A12 engine.

The body style did not matter, the gearbox model was directly linked to the engine capacity.
Australian Sunny Sportwagons used the A14 & A15 engines & the gearbox that was attached to these was the 60 series.
