hey everyone i was just reading sikdatto1200 i thinks thread about his first drift practice and they got into talking about 280zx struts for 1200s so im starting a new thread seeing as i dont think he would appreciate me hijacking his, here goes.

What is involded in putting z preferably 280zx struts in a 1200?

whats the benifits of using this strut setup?

what are peoples favorite strut setups for 1200s and why?

any help much appreciated

Jake

exactly the same as when putting stanza and other struts in, except that you will have the change the spring perch and maybe get a sheer load spacer for the bottom of the strut to locate on steering arm

240z and 260z steering arm bolt spacing is apparently different so for them you might need to use the z car steering arm

What year/model 1200 is this going into?

I have 280zx struts in my 1200 sedan im building up for supersprints. 19mm Vented discs and large caliper, very short stroke, gives you good braking and lots of travel on a lowered car, not to mention the strut inserts available.

You need to go to the larger size balljoint from a sunny/stanza or late model ute/late model 120y which means using the entire lower arm, balljoint, steering arm and radius rod (radius rod will need to be shortened or a late model ute or 120y item used), the spring seat is too large so you will need to use a sunny or stanza spring seat or weld on coilover sleeves. Use the 1200 top hat or adjustable tops. Also use a sunny or stanza outer rod end.

I have used adjustable lower arms and camber/castor tops, also koni reds and 275lb springs so I have no idea how your ride comfort and alignment will be with stock parts.

What I did find is the 280zx struts allow quite wide wheels to be run as the hub is quite a bit further away from the strut leg than a 1200 strut.

Edit: Pigdog, 280z is different too, if I could work out a way to bolt on a 240/260/280z steering arm, the strut would be a real good upgrade as its short like the zx and has the smaller diam spring, might be the ultimate upgrade if i can find the right parts.

+ When I found out about the R31 spacer ring mine was already all together and hasnt been apart yet so I dont know if its necessary but im sure I would of noticed when putting it together.

Ive never had the struts side by side, but I reckon stanza struts would give you more negative camber.

I was told by the blokes at Adelaide Z-Car that the taper on the ball joint is different and so is the steering arm spacing. They use the whole lower arm assm/balljoint/steering arm from a ZX when upgrading to ZX struts.

ah so they are sorta like r31 struts? more wheel clearance but less camber....unless you look at the front of my ute

different taper how, bigger or smaller

other good thing about them is that they have 270mm disc standard

EDIT, warmed L series...you will need r32 brakes

Yeah the same as the R31 struts, I think bluey/r31/280zx are all very similar.

As for taper Im not sure, Ive just done a bit of crossreferencing and early 1600 (p510) are the same balljoint as a 240/260/280. I have some 1600 suspensio parts at the shed, I can look how the taper differs.

Also there are some real good upgrades for the 280zx struts from the US. For about $650 delivered to my door I can have 330x30mm Wilwood rotors with alloy hats, 4spot dynalite wilwood calipers and all mounting bits etc.

smaller taper then....gay

what would you do with 330mm discs on a 1200? 17s just arent cool

apparently you can get 280x30mm discs and 4 piston sumitomo calipers on 200b struts
