I dont know the bloke, but I dont think "would he rip me off?" is really the question, he is just a guy with a car for sale, whether you like his car and want to pay what he is asking for it is what matters.
At the end of the day you are the only one who can rip yourself off by paying over the odds for a car, make sure it starts and drives well, check that it isnt full of rust and bog. Ive seen them for $500 and Ive seen them for $20,000, if its a nice car it would cost a lot more than that to fix up a dog to a good standard.
So spending a bit more initially can save you in the long run, My coupe was very clean and original when I bought it for $1800, it now owes me about $9,500 and doesnt look anywhere near as good as the ute your looking at.
