Hi everyone,

it's the serial pest again..... Can anybody recommend a good affordable rear shock to use on my 1200 Coupe? The car will be used for motorkhanas and hillclimbs. Rear ride height looks to be standard at this stage but the intention is to lower it a bit.

Thanks and regards

Paul H

There was once a koni adjustable damper that worked, but they're somewhat rare. Is there something better? perhaps.

Coupe shocks differ from sedan, maybe bmw 320i shocks will fit. I have modified 320i bilstein shocks in my daily drive sedan, they are borderline being too long as my cars lowered a fair bit, then again I have a two inch bump stop on the shock itself which doesnt help.

I'm using HQ holden front dampers in the back of my sedan, had to extend them a little bit as they're nice and short, but the coupes might need shorter dampers anyway, not really sure. Anyway, they're nice and firm, unlike the front suspension on my sedan

dat141, I used bel-ray motorcycle fork oil to replace the oil in the original drum struts, and 280z springs cut down a bit, its much much better and doesnt bottom out at all.

Theres some HQ Bilsteins on ebay atm

Thanks Whitesedan, I think I bottomed out my stanza struts at Oran Park a couple of weekends ago and ruined the dampers. Have got some 300zx KYB's and coil over kits to solve the front end issues im having. Cheers.

As for HQ dampers, I'm certain they would be a fair bit firmer than stock 1200 dampers, I'm just not sure if they are the right length to use in a coupe, but a quick cross check with a Monroe catalogue should be able to answer that question. Oh and you have to press out the rod that goes through the bottom bush, but thats simple. The only reason I used them was because they were lying around.

Paul, sit the car on the ground with existing shocks removed, measure the length required for replacement units.Take this info along with a sample standard shock (for example of each end) to Pedders or any reputable outlet and go thru there referance book for a vehicle you think would be suitable weight wise etc.As a matter of interest i have Holden Rodeo rear shocks on the back of the 1000 race car
