My brother is determined to get me to swap out the steering box in my 1000 for a rack similar to what IAMDVS has in the photos of his project (I hope you dont mind me borrowing your pic IAMDVS)

Has anyone done this, or doing or is it only possible with lots of money?

Why do you want to do it? Is it to save weight or have less turns lock to lock?

I dont think that the standard steering is too bad. There are much easier ways to go quicker, and if you are keen to have less turns lock to lock, im pretty sure there is a gear reduction kit you can buy somewhere. Just a thought...

Cheers

Considering that the box that I have is pooped and it needs a rebuild,(The screw is adjusted all the way and I still have about 4" of play.) he suggested that i go to something more modern.

its not for performance or weight.

I was happy with the original setup, but more of a question as to weather its worth the effort.

I'm doing this same mod to a 120Y so support an engine conversion. I found a local that is parting out a gemini that has rack steering (apparently a close fit to a datsun) so with any luck I'll have that this weekend and can post some pics and measurements for you also.

r-t did u have a wanted ad in the qokka for a 1000 steering setup? I saw one wanted about 1 day after i sent my stripped parts car off to scrap... it did have ok steering.

I reckon if u run wide wheels a rack from a fwd is better anyway. I dont think the standard steering box copes with anything bigger than 175 tyres for too long without too much wear.

what is that steering out of? i have a suzuki ute rack and pinion in the shed, too much f@#king around to put that particular one in, what is the one in the picture from?

This reducer kit u speak of??? i have heard of a speicial NISMO steering box that makes lock to lock about 1/2 turn, costs a fortune either way. Has anyone else heard of these reducer kits for the 1200 steering box? i spose if u had accsess to a decent engineering workshop you could make one up in no time, withthe right tools and the know-how.

The reason for my bro suggesting that i change to a rack is that the pit inspectors would like it a bit better than the standard box, considering the motor that is planned.
I spoke to an engineerer dude, and after my discussions with him about the plans, he suggested that it wouldnt be a bad thing.
Also getting the parts for the steering setup are getting hard to locate since I want to replace all the arms and stuff. Everything is worn, so out with the old and in with the new.

I might take you up on the offer, but I am not in a hurry at this stage. I plan on investigating a rack setup a bit more.
