Does anyone know of a freeware that actually works to extract scenes from a DVD???
I have a heap of movies in dvd format and want to make up 1 DVD of the "highlights". (only parts of scenes not whole chapters)
I will only ever need to do it once so I don't really want to go and spend a hundred bucks or so on specialty software.
Any help appreciated.

Not that I could find. I used the non-free software that comes with the DVD drives to get snapshots, but none of the programs I have are able to extract part of a movie.

Try DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. Decrypter breaks the DVD into millions of files, Shrink allows you to choose which of these files you wish to copy.

Thanks guys, DD that's about the same as what I have. I have Cyberlink Power DVD and it will let you take a screenshot but not a clip.
Whorida, thanks for the info, I'll try it today.
