How fast is pretty fast? Maybe your valveguide seals are cooked.

Once a week is a lot. I check oil maybe once a month.

Yes, perform the hill test which tests the rings under heavy load. Check for smoke when going down the hill as well (car in gear, foot off the accelerator). This tests the oil control rings.

Also perform the no-drive test: With engine warmed up, put it in nuetral with the parking brake on. Watch the tailpipe while you rap it to 4500 rpm two or three times. Don't hold the RPM, just 'blip' the pedal. If you see *any* bluish smoke, that is oil burning.

A good used 140,000 kilometer engine will show no bluish smoke in these tests. After this mileage it is common to get some bluish smoke. The A-series will still run good but eventually starts polluting with the burned oil smoke. Then it is time for new rings (a major repair job).
