FYI : This was discussed in detail about 3 years ago. Do a search and read some more.

They work ok, but there is a higher than normal wear factor as it's friction based system.

i dont agree converted...

they work very well on dirt and wet roads

not as effective on dry roads, but still much better than open diff

"poor man's LSD" about sums it up, works well... like an LSD.... for roughly a quarter of the price

i've had a few, they dont last more than say two years, but they just start to single spin and dont ruin your diff when they wear out

better than welding your diff (if you like turning corners, and especially on a street car) thats for sure

if you can afford an lsd they are defiantely worth it

but when i was at uni and didnt have cash to spend the phantom grip was excellent

many people make them, not just phantom grip

i actually made my own once for my brother in laws AE86, but i never really got to try it out

there is a place in melbourne that if you gave them your diff centre they would make and fit for $250, that was years ago so price is probably slightly higher now but im sure they still do them

I agree with 1200RC.
I recently pulled down my H150 unit, and was a bit dissapointed with the wear. It still worked though.
I have an H165 in my 1200, and I can smoke both tyres when staging at the drags. Sometimes I have to really smoke them hard to get them both going. But, also have trouble keeping it on the spot due to the traction.
The difference is quite marked compared to open though. With an open diff, I only had to sqeeze the gas too hard in first, or hit 2nd gear a whisker too hard, and it would spin one tyre furiously. (I once spun all the way into 4th) But with the SSL, It takes more effort to break out. (Can still do it pretty easy) And when it loses traction, it steps sideways and snakes down the road. (One pass at the drags I had to back off 'cos it was getting too sideways)
I'd really like try cryogenic annealing of the plates. Conventoinal hardening would be optimimum, but I run extremely tight clearances (.001"-.0035") and I fear that they may distort enough to effect the tolerances. Plus once they've been hardened, forget about remachining them.

Long story short, I like them beacause I can't afford a nismo one, or one of topgears units.
