Mine is the same way, I just thought it was because it was an old car! However, I have just replaced the exhaust manifold studs where it meets the down pipe. There was a gasket in there that don 't belong. I have not run the car yet but plan to this weekend. So if it runs I'll let you know if the smell remains the same.

Perhaps you left some old sports socks in the engine bay?

My car always smells like petrol inside the cabin but I put that down to the petrol tank being behind the cabin with a breather hose that goes down into the side of the boot.

The strange fume smell is possibly because you are running unleaded fuel with no cat converter.

Pitnando, are you asking about Exhaust (the engine was running and got exhaust on the clothes), or gasoline/petrol fumes?

Ah, the USA models have a semi-sealed fuel tank system. Normally petrol fumes can only escape from under the bonnet

What did Portugal get?

Normally the sealed system puts no smell in the garage, however leaks are common with old cars and until they are all fixed, yes it is a bad (pungent, sharp) smell from this new types of gasoline.

It took me a long time to figure out where all the pinhole leaks were. One was the rocker cover-to-air cleaner breather hose.

when i started engine the 1st time it smelt like that

but that was off a dump pipe
when i got exhaust with mufflers and cat i didnt notice as much but havent left running very long

if u used diff lubes on assembly oily hands on hot parts such as exhaust this may give off the smell

what sort of smell exactly?

Have I spent too long sniffing fumes?

What's really weird is if you have a car that burns propane, you can actually smell the other cars on the road and you can pick out which ones have check engine lights on a block a way.

Rotten Eggs = Overrich mixture reacting in catalytic converter
Lean makes a weird smell like paint thinner

There's a special smell engines running at lambda make too, i can't describe it but if you have a gasoline powered electric generator you know it.

If you have an oil leak / leaking oil / old leaked oil then that can make a petroleum smell that sticks in the clothes, there are a number of things.

95 octane probably is not needed for the engine, that might make an odd smell since there may be unburned stuff escaping since higher octanes will burn slower and in a lower compression engine perhaps not burn fully, or produce NOx and other stinky things.

I've been working on tuning my car to get the most gas millage out of it and have produced many odd smells in the process.

you either have an exhaust leak which will get in the cabin no matter what

or

a hole somewhere, like a missing rubber grommet or unsealed gear lever boot that is letting fumes into the cabin

Sounds like he has a oil leak, leaking onto the exhaust or it is burning oil and you can only smell it when your in the confines of a garage?

We need smell-o-vison!
