Here's the breakdown
B= Small Datsun model bodyshell with A series engine
1= second model. [the first one was a B10/B20]
10= Passenger model body
20= truck, or in this case, a Ute body.
B120's, from date of introduction untill the end of B110 production were mechanically the same as B110. Same engine, trans, & we believe, the rear end was the same too [to be confirmed]
When the 120Y was introduced [B210] the engine design was changed so Datsun incorporated this new version of the engine into the Ute. It also got the new version of the gearbox, but a cut down version of the larger rear axle assembly that was otherwise found in the larger model Station Wagons with the L series engines. [1600/180B etc]
So the Ute was essentially a poverty pack version of the 1200 car during the time that it was made alongside the car models, but got the newer mechanicals & an uprated rear end when these mechanicals were introduced with the 120Y model release.
The model codes are
1967 to '70. B10 & B20 [Datsun 1000]
1970 to '73 B110 & B120 [Datsun 1200]
1974 to '77 B210 & B120 [Datsun 120Y & 1200 Ute]
1978 to '81 B310 & B120 [Nissan/Datsun Sunny & Nissan/Datsun 1200 Ute]

There is a raft of differences. Starting with 10.
- Engine is different (new style engine)
- Suspension is different (larger)
- Diff is different (stronger)
etc, etc, etc.
