Gearbox oil for FWD car. What must I use GL4 or GL5?

Hi there

As the subject says.
What is the difference between the two? I heard that GL5 is used in diffs and the GL4 is used in the gearbox.
But, the FWD gearbox as I understand has the diff incorporated into it.
Does that mean I must use the GL5 one?

Any info appreciated.

what the hell is GL4 and GL5?

Use 70/80 gearbox oil in a FWD Manual trans. Or 80 at a pinch. Any thicker and you'll struggle to find 2nd on a cold morning.

I can get the GL5 in a 80W90 and the GL4 in a 80W.
This is for my Nissan Almera (Pulsar there in Aus).2004 model.

Don't know.But the research I have done on the internet is that if GL5 is used where a GL4 is suppose to be used, it can cause premature syncromesh wear.

Some more info I got from the internet.This is a quote of someone's reply about the differences between the oils.

GL-5 gear oils are for gears like our differentials where the pinion is below the centerline of the ring gear. You can look at the outside of the differential housing on the front side and see that. There is much sliding on the gear teeth, and the oil has to be blended for that. These are called hypoid gears. A gearbox without hypoid gears, like a transmission, does not need this particular additive package in the oil. GL-4 gear oil works well. Some GL-5 oils used a sulfur based additive to make them GL-5, and the sulfur would damage yellow metals...brass, bronze, & copper...in the transmission. Many modern GL-5 gear oils do not have the sulfur in them and are labeled for both GL-4 and GL-5 applications.

Hi i do not know the real difference between the two, but gl5 is a more slippery oil and it will cause crunching in the wrong application. I used shell 75w-90 gl5 in my pulsar gtir gear box and it was know good, i then switched to genuine hyundai 75w85 gl4 abd the gear box has been the best its ever been. Hpoe this helps you out.

like i said, any thicker and 75-90 is thicker (get it higher number thicker the oil) the harder it is to select gears, ie crunching. I think it even states in the owners handbook the types of oil. 80w is a max for manual trans.
